A Review of Always A Catch
What happens when you suddenly are not the next in line for succession? That is something that Mimi gradually discovers in Always A Catch. Mimi has been groomed to be the heir of her family until the sudden birth of her baby brother. Now, she is expected to find a man to marry. What is a girl to do?
Pivoting is hard to do, especially when it is unexpected, like in Mimi’s circumstances. However, Mimi embraces the change. She loves her little brother and is glad that she doesn’t have to be the heir anymore. She has a new goal of finding her perfect match no matter how far she has to travel.
Mimi’s travels lead her to her relative Aida, who lives in a nearby kingdom. While there, Mimi gets a crash course in noble society. One of the things that I like is that she doesn’t let the rules of nobility change her. She blends the things that she likes about noble society with her own personality. She gains confidence in dressing the part by wearing gorgeous dresses (she used to wear only military clothing). However, she still maintains her voice and military prowess, which have rescued people on numerous occasions. Instead of being proper and quiet, she is a woman of action. I wish we saw more people like Mimi in the media in general.
Mimi does fear that her actions might scare off the guys in noble society. However, I liked how Mimi gradually learns that you need to find a romantic partner who complements you. Mimi found her match in Prince Renato. He loves Mimi’s streak of independence and her ability to fight on her own. Mimi loves that she can be her own person with Renato and not cater to someone’s expectations.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by Mimi. She is a well-rounded character with her own dreams and ambitions. She marches to the beat of her own drum, which I feel is a good example for young girls to follow their own path instead of what society expects from them. Mimi is fine the way she is, and hopefully through Mimi, other girls will learn that too.
